Meet Fernanda Abigaíl Salgado, a scholarship recipient from Ojo de Agua, El Paraíso. Fernanda grew up in a loving family of six. Her father worked steadily in plumbing, and her mother cared for the children while running a small bread-baking business to help support the household.

From a young age, Fernanda shone as a dedicated and high-achieving student. She often remembers her parents’ words: “Education is the best legacy a parent can give to their children.”

But when it came time for high school, the cost of transportation and school supplies created challenges her family couldn’t overcome alone. That’s when they discovered the Friends of Honduran Children (FoHC) scholarship program.

When Fernanda was accepted, everything changed.

The scholarship covered Grades 8–12 and ensured she could attend school each day, relieving the stress of overdue bus fees and giving her the chance to focus fully on her studies.

During her final years of high school, Fernanda’s father lost his job and the pandemic brought new hardships. Yet the scholarship continued to carry her through. She used it for internet access and study materials so she could keep learning remotely.

Fernanda’s hard work and your generosity made one thing possible: she graduated high school and earned a nursing certificate, all while helping her family navigate uncertain times.

After graduating high school with the help of her FOHC scholarship, Fernanda continued her nursing training and secured a position at a local clinic. There, she served her community with compassion and skill – turning her education into impact.

But like many young professionals in Honduras, she faced unexpected setbacks. Recently laid off from the clinic, Fernanda is now working toward relocating to Tegucigalpa to pursue a university degree in Clinical Pharmacy.

Her dream?
To deepen her healthcare training and make an even greater difference in the lives of others.

Fernanda is resilient, grateful, and determined and students just like her are waiting for the chance to continue their education.
