This week is National Volunteer Week, where volunteer-based organizations have the opportunity to share just how thankful we are for the hard work and dedication of our most valuable, yet un-paid human resources; volunteers. This year’s theme is Volunteers are the roots of strong communities. At Friends of Honduran Children, our community is not just in Peterborough, but also in Honduras and across Canada, as we engage supporters and volunteers from many communities.
FoHC volunteers are brigade leaders and members, board members, committee members, fundraisers, office support, and so much more. You are not just the roots, but the trunk, the branches, and the beautiful leaves of our tree! You tirelessly give of yourselves, to ensure that children in Honduras have a better life. Most of you have full-time jobs, and yet dedicate much of your time, energy, and resources to this organization. The only payment you receive is a ‘thank you’ and the assurance that you are making a difference in the lives of so many children who love you.
Some days, the work you do seems to be an insurmountable task with the challenges and difficulties that arise. You put forth a mammoth effort, only to feel as though it went nowhere. But…look at how far we’ve come! Look at what you’ve accomplished! 183 children. 14 homes. 2 transition houses. New rural schools. A new health center. Thousands of people receiving medical care for the first time. Educational support for teachers in rural areas. Specialized medical care for people in remote villages. Clean drinking water. Education and awareness. New cook stoves, latrines, pilas, floors, and improvements in small communities. Scholarships that allow children the opportunity to finish high school. Children who are graduating and reaching their dreams of going to University. …and we could go on and on! You have done so much!!!
Thank you for keeping us rooted. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of Honduran children. Thank you for giving your time and energy to see a better tomorrow. Thank you for just being you!
With sincere gratitude,
