In 1979 while travelling to Honduras as part of a medical brigade, Peterborough, Ontario oral surgeon Dr. Jim McCallum met Sister Maria Rosa and witnessed first-hand the terrifying and tragic conditions that so many Honduran children face every day. Upon his return to Canada, Dr. McCallum founded Friends of Honduran Children in response to his fervent desire to help Sister Maria Rosa in her tireless efforts. 32 years later, Friends is a thriving non-profit, grass roots organization based in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
“We can’t change the world but in this little part we can make a difference.”
~ Dr. Jim McCallum, Founder, Friends of Honduran Children.
Our efforts have helped to save thousands of children from the ravaging effects of hopeless poverty. Working with our Honduran partner Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, we use a broad approach to solve the problem one Honduran child at a time. We’re focused on delivering sustainable programs rather than quick-fix band-aid solutions, providing the necessary aid, supplies and skills that allow Hondurans to help themselves as they strive to obtain self-sufficiency and personal fulfillment.
Sociedad Amigos de los Niños
Based primarily within the city of Tegucigalpa, Sociedad Amigos de los Niños strives to help Honduras’ most vulnerable. For more than 40 years, Sociedad founder Sister Maria Rosa Leggol has delivered hope and an opportunity to forge a brighter future through self-pride and self-sustainability. In that time, more than 35,000 children have been rescued, cared for and educated.
By caring for their basic human needs, Sociedad is improving quality of life for Honduras’ most destitute children, young people, mothers, families and communities. Their programs offer safety, education, health care, housing, and spiritual guidance in addition to technical, financial and holistic training.
Sociedad currently operates its development programs in the Miraflores neighbourhood and the rural community of Moroceli in eastern Honduras.
Sister Maria Rosa
Dedicated to developing programs that help the children and youth of Honduras grow and succeed in life, Sister Maria Rosa Leggol, founder of Sociedad Amigos de los Niños is a living example of kindness, selflessness and love of fellow man.
Because she too is an orphan, Sister Maria Rosa witnessed firsthand the lack of loving care and individual personal attention given to children who had lost their parents. From her own experiences she was inspired to create a more loving environment and better living conditions for the children.
Sister Maria Rosa’s major desire has always been to help her fellow Hondurans help themselves to become productive citizens. Some of her children are now successful professionals who are using their knowledge and skills to develop the country. Her humble and quiet task has always been characterized by the energy and love she has inspired in each of them – helping them to find hope and reclaim the right to enjoy a productive, meaningful life.
